There are very few actual indigenous large production crop varieties from the USA. Most items that are grown and considered staples were brought from other countries. Blueberries and cranberries, strawberry, grape variety, and sunflowers are in fairly big production, with a very few odd herbs (to include medicinals) and plants in small and niche markets. All plants on the planet, with the exception of only one so far, have value or are edible in some form or fashion, but are not marketable for any number of reasons. There may be additions to this list by others (I would be interested in that).

As for India, I would have to research but in the thousands of years of culture and food that is a huge task, but many of the worlds staples did originate in this area.

Are you talking about plants that were native to the regions before agriculture was invented (8000 - 10000years ago) and have been adapted by man to agricultural crops?

In the US - corn (maize), peppers, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, tobacco.

In India - not sure. Probably rice and some other forms of grain; onions, beans, peas, cotton.
